CHINESE REFUGEES IN

HONG-KONG

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

HONG-KONG, JUNE 6

With 100,000 Chinese refugees from Canton already in Hong-kong, the refugee problem is extremely difficult, and the Anglican Bishop, Dr. R. O. Hall, has asked the Government to establish a re- fugee camp, but the Governor, Sir Geoffry Northcote, has refused and, it is understood, has prohibited private action owing to disease and other complications. The Bishop is therefore proceeding to Canton to try to arrange for a neutral zone in the vicinity of Macao, which is a Portuguese possession.

General Yu Hon-mou, the military commander of Kwangtung, stated to-day that measures had been taken to prevent able-bodied men from taking refuge in Hong-kong, and that all able-bodied men were being conscripted.
